Lewis Edward Carter, age 84, of West Salem, Illinois, formerly of Clay City, passed away Wednesday evening, August 24, 2022, at his home.
He was born July 31, 1938, in Bridgeport, the son of Harold and Alice (Wilson) Carter.
Lewis was a graduate of Clay City High School. He proudly served in the Marines from April 1959 until May 1963. He drove a truck and worked bridge construction for several years. He worked at Quantum Chemical Plant for many years as well, before retiring and moving to West Salem. Lewis enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, horseback riding, cooking, and spending time with family.
He is survived by his children: Troy Carter of Schaumburg, Brenda Carter of Olney, John (Ann) Carter of Pana, Jayson (Colette) Carter of Shorewood, and Amanda Carter of Joliet; 9 grandchildren; siblings: Marjorie Smith of Braidwood, Robert Guy (Dee Ann) Staley of Clay City, and Steven (Tammy) Staley of Pontiac; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father: Harold Carter; mother: Alice Gill; a son: Dale Carter; stepfather: Robert Guy Staley; stepfather: Gaylord Gill; a brother: Harold Carter Jr.; and 2 sisters: Shirley Garrett and Marilyn White.
A visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Frank & Bright funeral home in Flora. Military funeral honors and a funeral ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A committal ceremony and interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 2, in Clay City Cemetery. I'm so sorry he must have been a great man because of the way he raised Troy is admired

Louy was a first cousin but I loved him like a brother. We were very close as kids
