Jan Cycholl, formerly of Flora, Illinois, died on Thursday, June 6, 2024. At the time of her death, she resided at StoneBridge Memory Care in Olney, Illinois. She was 84 years old.
Born in Springfield, Jan was a homemaker and teacher. She taught grade school in the Chicago area and operated the Peppermint Treehouse Preschool in Flora for nearly twenty years. She served on the Flora School and Library Boards. Jan was also involved in the life of Faith Lutheran Church in Flora and later was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Antioch.
Jan is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Fred Cycholl, as well as by her parents Virgil and Helen Broch (Springfield, IL).
She is survived by children Garin and Shadla (Homewood, IL), Michaela and Steve Hartzer (Lake Villa, IL), Trenton and Jennifer (Boca Raton, FL), and Dr. Brandon and Tyra (Olney, IL). Also, by ten grandchildren, Adam, Kelsey and Kyle Hartzer; Taryn, Janna, Freddy and Adeline Cycholl; and Savannah, Owen and Prairie Cycholl.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Pastor Dean Herberts officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. A visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Jan’s family encourages memorial donations to the Flora Public Library, the Flora Academic Foundation, or the Clay County Hospice, and these will be accepted through the funeral home. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I met Jan as my first born, Zach, which was delivered by her husband Dr. Fred Cycholl, started school at Peppermint Treehouse . Jan and her husband was such a large part of our pull together community and ran the hospital and nursing homes with the help of so many other great doctor's from the good ole hospital on 7th St. Where so many of the last of the baby Boomers were delivered. Your family will never be forgotten. You and Fred R.I.P. together now. ❤️

Jan was always a “bonus mom” to me when I was the pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Flora. She was such a sweet and loving woman to everyone she knew. Her love for Jesus was always evident. I look forward to seeing her and Fred in heaven!

We loved Mrs. Cycholl. She was so helpful to us and was a loving and caring teacher to our son when he attended Peppermint Treehouse. She gave great advice. She was the best. Jan was the most gracious person who served her family and community in so many ways. Her gentle unassuming ways yet strong leadership abilities live on through her children, now grown. Both she and Dr. Fred were positive influences in many lives who are grateful to have called them friends.
