James Edgar Keck, age 92, of Swansea, Illinois, and formerly of Clay County, passed away Tuesday night, October 22, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his children.
He was born on February 5, 1932, in Hoosier Township, Clay County, the son of Edgar W. and Marguerite (Patridge) Keck. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Coggan on April 6, 1957, at the Sailor Springs Christian Church, and together they shared 65 wedding anniversaries until her passing on September 12, 2022.
Jim was a lifelong farmer, working the land for much of his life. In addition to farming, he worked for the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Ladd Petroleum, and co-owned K & K Oil. He also served honorably in the U.S. Navy, spending three years overseas, including time in Japan.
Jim was an active member of his community, belonging to several organizations, including the Sailor Springs American Legion, Flora Elks, Farm Bureau, Lucky Ramblers Camping Club, Clay City Squares, and Odd Fellows. He also served as a committeeman for Hoosier Township.
In his free time, Jim enjoyed playing card games, especially poker and gin, as well as ping-pong. He loved watching basketball and took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren participate in any sporting events. He also enjoyed tending to his garden, hunting, and joining friends for early morning coffee.
He is survived by his children: Kimberly (Bob) Redfern of Marianna, Florida, Tammy (Bill) Shroyer of Decatur, Amanda Keck of Millstadt, and William (Melissa) Keck of Anna-Jonesboro; 6 grandchildren: Jeremy Carter, Jarrod Carter, Nathan Shroyer, Rachel Stevens, Ryan Redfern, and Spencer Keck; 5 great-grandchildren: Kaidince Carter, Jaidyn Carter, Kaylee Heck-Shroyer, Will Shroyer, and Ranger Shroyer; and also a much anticipated new great-granddaughter who is expected to make an appearance in January.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; wife; a great-granddaughter: Rozzalynn Carter; a brother: Charles Keck; and a sister: Doris Knowles.
The family would like to give special thanks to Family Hospice of Belleville and their excellent team led by Tammy Ennor and Gerald Springmeyer for the care and comfort provided in their time of need.

I am truly sorry to hear about Jim, I have such good memories of us all growing up together. Spending time at your house , playing in the old house , stealing the tomatoes out of Carolyn's Garden, lol..riding the dirt bikes , just lots of sweet memories. I wouldn't trade that time for anything in the world. Last time I saw him was at my dad's birthday party in southern Illinois..it was so awesome for them ( plus your mom and Bill)to come all that way to the party , seemed like old times . Wish we could go back...Love and hugs to you all, may he rest in peace😘
