Stephanie Lynne Bissey of Kirksville, MO, passed away at home on January 11, 2025, at the age of 55.
She was born on November 1, 1969, at the U.S. Army Hospital, Ft Belvoir, VA, to Trevor and Doris Mayo Bissey. Stephanie was loved by many around the world as the family moved frequently due to her father’s service in the Army. She attended school in Sausalito, CA, Marina, CA, and Heidelburg, Germany. She started high school in Monticello, Illinois, at Monticello High School. In 1985 the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Stephanie would graduate from Fort Zumwalt North High School in 1987. While moving first upset her, Stephanie later told her parents that moving to St. Louis was the best thing that had happened to her. After graduation, Stephanie moved to Kirksville, Missouri, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Truman State University, formerly known as Northeast Missouri State University. As one of her Kirksville friends put it, “She came to Kirksville as a student at Truman, but she always worked—the Golden Spike, Bogies, DuKum, Sugar Creek Nursery—and the town fell in love with her.” She was a familiar and warm face at DuKum Inn Bar and Grille, having been a manager there from 1999-2021. More recently she could be found working at Claire’s Garden and Peckosh Landscaping. All were jobs where she found joy in her work and loved what she did.
Stephanie is survived by her parents; brother, Brian Bissey of Bloomington, IL; niece, Kelly Bissey, of St. Louis, MO; nephew, Sean Bissey of Bloomington, IL; uncle, Jerry Mayo of Clay City, IL; aunts, Carolyn Martin of Cisne, IL, and Alice Murry of Olney, IL; and several cousins, as well as her two beloved dogs, Cash and Chewy. Also surviving is Steve Knight, Stephanie’s special friend of Kirksville, MO.
She is preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Russell and Evelyn Bissey; Casey & Leone Mayo; uncles, Don Mayo & Lee Bissey; aunt, Rita Stanley; cousins, Carey Deem, Larry Martin and Cody Mayo.
Stephanie was a captivating individual. To know her was to love her. She had a beaming smile that could light up the darkest of rooms. She was kind and generous, quick-witted and funny, friendly and warm. She never met a stranger and always had time to stop, catch up, and give an old friend a hug. She enriched every life she was a part of. She loved big and deep and made sure people knew how she felt about them. She never left a conversation without saying, “I love you.”
Stephanie is a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Monticello, IL.
A visitation is scheduled for 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 18, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Frank and Bright Funeral Home, Flora, Illinois. Interment will be in Clay City Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held in Kirksville, MO, at a later date. Stephanie will be missed by many people...I will miss seeing her bright smile when she worked at dukum inn...
Stephanie will be greatly missed by all the people who she touched. Her kindness and fun spirit will live on in her memories.
We're going to miss Stephanie endlessly. Her sweet heart, her beautiful laugh, and her instinctive ability to love what's best in us. It's safe to say that much of Kirksville is deeply saddened at her passing.
Stephanie was one of my most favorite people. She was always warm and almost enchanting. Though years have past since I have able to see her on a regular basis, I was always excited to see a post from her on social media. Things she mentioned on posts and in person were always interesting, fun, and kind. I've never known a gentler soul. I was crushed by her passing. The world will be a darker place without her. I wish I could go to her services, so I could spend time with people mourning her loss and sharing stories of her life. I will definitely raise a glass to her on Saturday and listen to some groovy music in her memory. God bless all who loved her.
Trevor and Doris, I am so very sorry for your loss. While I never met Stephanie in person, we were Facebook friends and I so enjoyed interacting with her there. She was lovely and well-loved. I will be praying for your family.
In life, we rarely have the opportunity to meet a person who brings happiness to you every time our paths crossed. That was your beautiful, funny Stephanie. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of Stephanie's family and friends.
So sorry to hear of your loss, we have you in our thoughts and prayers.
I have not seen Steph in person for years, but am close friends with Trevor and Doris, and Steph have kept up with Stephanie on FB through her warm comments, jokes, birthday announcements and everyday happenings. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends (of which she has so many).... The world was a better place with you in it for sure!
We were so sorry to hear of Stephanie’s passing - thinking of you at this sad time. 🙏
Stephanie was one of the most friendly people to inhabit Kirksville. She greeted everyone with a smile and most generally a hug followed by conversation. I first met her when she worked at the DuKum, but in latter years, was welcomed by her at Peckosh Nursery where she was happy to show me what we referred to as our “plant babies”. Stephanie was a “ bright light” within our small community, and anyone who knew her has an empty feeling just knowing we won’t soon see her radiant smile again. She was loved and gave love in return to so many.
We are so sorry for your loss. Praying that you find comfort and peace during this difficult time.
I love you, Steph. You will be missed. Your smile and laughter will be remembered for a lifetime. I will be praying for your family and friends. I’m grateful to have known you and will share so many memories and of laughing at Pool league and oh, the fun we had.
I met Stephanie several years ago when she worked at Spike and later at DuKum. She definitely had a very special light about her. Always a smile and happy. She knew immediately how to make you day better! She will be missed so much and forever lived!
So sorry for your loss, your family is in our prayers
It is hard for me to imagine a world without Stephanie Bissey. She was a great friend of our family for 33 years. She loved everybody, and she would always tell you so. Her smile could soften steel. It was a better world with her in it.when she was in it.
We're so sorry for your loss. Prayers are with your family.
We will miss Stephanie and we are so blessed that we were able to do life with her. I am Krissy's sister and the love and friendship Stephanie had with my sister truly made my heart happy. They were two peas in a pod and we will miss Stephanie so much; her smile, her hugs, her laugh, hearing her tell us she loved us anytime we saw her. She was family to us. We sure loved her. Thank you for sharing her with our family.
