Geneva Martha O’Brien Welty, age 95, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday morning, January 21, 2025, at Clay County Hospital.
She was born October 5, 1929, in Lutie, Missouri, the daughter of Jess and Martha (Beavers) Miller. She was united in marriage to James F. O’Brien on May 26, 1949, and he preceded her in passing on September 15, 1989. She later married Don Welty on October 8, 2011, and he survives.
Geneva enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, embroidery, sewing, and creating clothing. Cooking was her “love language,” and her homemade noodles were always a favorite. Her cooking style was best described as a pinch of “this” and a dash of “that.” Faith was a cornerstone of Geneva’s life, and she was a lifetime member of Oak Mound Christian Church. She cherished every opportunity to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who were her greatest treasures.
She is survived by her husband, Don Welty of Flora; a son, Garry (Connie) O’Brien of Clay City; a daughter-in-law, Susan O’Brien of Xenia; a son-in-law, George Tepker of Chatham; five grandchildren: Brent Pearson, Brian Pearson, Brittiney (Curtis) Greenwood, Amy (Doug) Thompson, and Chris O’Brien; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James O’Brien; three children: Larry O’Brien, Jeannie Pearson Tepker, and Henry O’Brien; and several siblings.
A funeral ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Burial will follow in Oak Mound Cemetery, Xenia. Visitation will be from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to Oak Mound Christian Church, and these will be accepted by the funeral home.
