Barbara A. Pickens Hamilton, age 77, of Flora, Illinois passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Flora Rehabilitation and HealthCare Center in Flora.
Barbara was born November 8, 1936 in Clay City to Lyle and Ina (McKinney) Stanley. She married James W. Pickens on June 2, 1954 in Clay County. Barbara later married Donald A. Hamilton on January 15, 2000. She worked for Camcar Aerospace in Rockford for 3 years and was a member of the Sailor Springs Christian Church, working as the janitor for 20 years. Barbara was also employed by the Clay City Schools as a cook, retiring after 24 years and also did volunteer work at Clay County Hospital. She loved working outside with her flowers, watching the birds, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband: Don Hamilton of Flora; 3 sons: James Randall “Randy” Pickens (wife Barb) of Atoka, Oklahoma, Flint Nicole “Nick” Pickens (wife Marsha) of Sailor Springs, Sterling Cortney Pickens (wife Julie) of Kansas City, Missouri; step-son: Bruce Hamilton; step-daughter: Donna Milner (husband Larry) of Flora; 7 grandchildren: Lee (Shaina) Pickens, Bryan (Sarah) Pickens, Camden Pickens, Stephanie Pickens, Cora Pickens, April Pickens, Madison Pickens; 7 step-grandchildren: Brandon Davis, John Craig Lane, Chad (Emily) Milner, Bruce (Jennifer) Hamilton Jr., Chad Hamilton, Jarod (Jennie) Hamilton, Jamie Hamilton; 8 great-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. Also surviving is a special aunt: Irma Ballard of Champaign. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister (Carolyn Hurd).
The funeral service for Barbara Hamilton will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with interment following in Ingraham Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Memorial donations may take the form of assisting with the placement of a monument for Barbara. You were one of my favorite Aunts, I can always remember you being so cheerful. You just made everyone feel good when you were with them. I praise God that you served the Lord and knew him and now you have entered eternity with our Lord and savior Jesus. I will see you soon when we meet again! I love you. Sterling, Nick & Randy: I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was loved by many people, including myself. Lots of people are remembering her, very fondly, by sharing stories on facebook. Hopefully they will make it over here to this on-line guestbook so you three can read them, too. I won't be able to make it back home for the services, but please know I'm there in spirit & prayer. We enjoyed working with Barbara at school. She was always so much fun and we loved getting her tickled and making her laugh. She would laugh so hard she turned red and doubled over. Sometimes with Calvin telling her stories, she would turn red from embarrassment. We already missed seeing her and will miss her now forever.
