Eva Glassford, age 91, of Flora, Illinois passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Flora Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Flora.
Eva was born June 19, 1923 in Clay County to Ray J. and Arminta (Gullett) McGrew. She married Nelson Eugene “Gene” Glassford on December 31, 1940 and he preceded her in death on October 3, 1974. Eva worked at both Carter’s Cleaners and Bill’s Cleaners for many years. Following that, she was employed as a teacher’s aide in an L.D. room at Center Street School in Fairfield. After retirement, Eva became involved in community work. She was elected and served on the Clay County Board for 18 years, was a member of the Board of Review for 8 years, and served on other miscellaneous boards including Clay County Hospital, Clay County Mental Health, Clay County Rehabilitation Center, C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation, and Flora Senior Citizens Center.
Eva was a dedicated Christian who practiced her faith daily. She was a lifelong member of McCabe Chapel General Baptist Church and held offices in both the church and Ladies Aide. Eva’s love and deep affection for family was evident in her willingness to be of help when there was a need, often as a caregiver during times of illness. She occasionally wrote poems and also had a passion for cooking. It was her greatest joy and delight to have family and friends at her table for a meal and Eva considered herself blessed and was thankful for her health and opportunity to do so.
She is survived by 2 sons: Joe F.E. Glassford of McLeansboro and James E. (Charlotte) Glassford of Flora: 3 grandchildren: Yancey (Lori) Glassford, Mark (Connie) Glassford, and Tammy Steele; and 7 great-grandchildren: Sterling and Trisha Steele, Cody and Katy Glassford, and Lily, Samuel, and Noah Glassford. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers (Merle, Russell, Neil and Maurice McGrew) and a daughter-in-law (Sandy Glassford).
The funeral service for Eva Glassford will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with interment following in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be given to McCabe Chapel General Baptist Church and will be received at the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.frankandbright.com.
