Troy Eugene “Gene” Douthit, age 85, of Flora, Illinois passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 in Flora.
Gene was born October 10, 1929 in Dix, Illinois to Troy and Grace (Mooney) Douthit. He married Thelma Eileen Dillman on December 24, 1949. She preceded him in death on June 10, 1968. He later married Thelma Louise Taylor in January 18, 1969. She also preceded him in death on March 30, 1981. He then married Annie Mae Burkett on October 19, 1982.
Gene started work at a very early age and was employed by many companies including Dowell, Yellow Freight, Clark Construction, and the Flora Opportunity Center. He shared in the ownership of the Texaco and Shell gas stations in Flora. Gene loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and he also loved to fish.
Gene is survived by his wife Annie and a blended family that includes 1 son: Larry (Debbie) Douthit of Newburg, IN; 4 step-sons: Mark (Cheryl) Forth of Andrews, IN, Jimmy (Leslie) Shelton of Evansville, IN, Cecil (Tara) Shelton of Flora, and Jason (Annette) Burkett of Flora; 3 daughters: Gina Douthit of Virginia Beach, VA, Kayla (Kevin) Steele of Flora, and Brandi (Richard) Vaughn of Magnolia, KY; 1 step-daughter: Christina Forth Daggett of Andrews, IN; a daughter-in-law: Mary Douthit of Evansville, IN; 3 sisters: Wilma Mays of Mt. Vernon, Shirley Phelps of Centralia, and Ramona (Mike) Flanagan of Mt. Vernon; 1 brother: Charles (Mary) Douthit of Boyd; 15 grandchildren: Eric, Courtney, Jason, Amber, Lacey, Keith, Alisa, Dani, Charley, Jason, Bryce, Taylor, Jarius, Tori, and Ethan; and 5 great-grandchildren: Madison, Lauren, Gabriel, Brayden, and Troy Douglas who was born on November 3, 2014.
In addition to his two wives, Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Danny Douthit, 2 grandsons: Brent Shroyer and Derek Windle, a granddaughter: Natasha Windle, a brother: Voris “Bud” Douthit, a sister: Marilyn Blackwell, and a son-in-law: Gene Daggett.
A funeral service for Gene Douthit will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in the Floral Garden of Memories. Memorial donations may be made to Clay County Rehabilitation Center (formerly the Flora Opportunity Center). Sorry to hear about Gene. He was a great guy and a lot of to be around when he run the gas stations here in Flora. He will be missed.
