Marie Connett, age 99 years, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 in Flora.
She was born Marie Lucille Block on May 29, 1915 in East St Louis, IL to Frederick and Frances (Craft) Block. The Crafts’ were longtime residents of Flora.
Marie met her future husband, James Aaron Connett while attending McKendree College in Lebanon, IL. During college, she was the secretary to the college dean. James and Marie were married in 1939 in Effingham, IL by his father, Rev. O. E. Connett who was then pastor of the Methodist Church there. Marie served as a pastor’s wife for few years of Methodist ministerial service in several Southern Illinois towns before James volunteered to enter the Chaplaincy in the U. S. Army. Marie and children returned to Flora to live with the Rev. O. E. Connetts while James served in WWII. Marie became an Army wife again when James entered the service during the Korean War and moved to many duty stations during his long military career. While living at Ft. Myer, VA, Marie worked in the local Red Cross Chapter on the post. She had the unique experience of being present at the burial of President John F. Kennedy in Arlington Cemetery during this time.
When her husband passed away in 1973, Marie returned to their home in Flora where she became very active in the First Methodist Church, teaching adult Sunday school, and volunteering for many committees. In 2001, she was honored with the Little Wabash District Woman of the Year in Missions Award. Marie also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, for the Flora Hospice, and as an information volunteer at the Clay County Hospital. She was devoted to the service of others and drove many people to medical appointments, took cards and food to shut-ins, and visited many residents in the Flora care centers. Marie loved gardening and flowers and enjoyed attending the Flora Garden Club for many years. She lived in, and was well traveled in many states, including Alaska and Hawaii, cruised the Caribbean, visited Japan, and toured the Holy Lands.
Marie is survived by her three children: Chaplain (COL) Reynold B. Connett, USA, Ret. of Olympia, WA, Janice A. Connett, of Albuquerque, NM, and James E. Connett, General Manager of the RAF/STL Classical Radio Station in St. Louis, MO. Marie is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Lisa, Erik, Kysa, Sean, Erin, Kelsey, Woo Jin, Charles, Jennifer, Justin, and Alexis; and nine great-grandchildren: Kira Marie, Anthony, Kai, Kiahna, Garrett, Anna Marilyn, Riley, Elizabeth, and Emiliana. So sorry to hear this news. Marie was a good friend of my Aunts and she was always so nice. I'm sure a lot of people will miss her.
Marie was definitely one strong and independent lady. What a fine example she did set for young women. May she rest in peace.
A great saint has gone home! She touched so many lives!
We remember Marie in so many ways. She was a very dear friend and I will always keep two words in mind "God Bless". She always ended our telephone conversation as well as each visit at her home with "God Bless".
Remembrance of Marie was her kind quiet style of loving & helping everyone. Marie was a true Christian Lady & loyal CCH Auxiliary volunteer. I best remember Marie being so kind to Helen Rich!
This very special lady touched so many peoples lifes it was a honor to know her
Marie was always a special favorite in our house. Our parents were especially close with Marie. They were probably waiting for her at the gate. Rest in peace, Marie, you are now home.
Since 1941 Marie Connett was as close to the Late John and Helen Livingston as she could be. When the former Ruth Veihman of Mt. Carmel joined the family in 1988, she became even closer. Upon the deaths of John and Helen, Marie sat with the family. She will always be regarded as part of our family.
Heaven gained another angel when Marie left this earth. No words can hold a candle to what a great Christian lady she was. She lived everyday to serve the Lord and help so many people along the way. This world would be so much better with more people like her. Many people were touched by her kindness and generosity. God Bless you Marie Connett you will never be forgotten.
Marie was a lovely Christian lady and a wonderful neighbor and friend. She is now where she would want to be and continues to be an angel - only in heaven with her Father. She will be sadly missed.
We have many fond memories of Marie - from doing push-ups to stay healthy to visiting the sick and leaving a tiny flower. Her leaving us will leave a void but she is rejoicing and having a great time with her beloved husband.
Dear Family and Friends of Marie B. Connett, In memory of Marie's life, having enriched so many through her example, I send my deepest sympathy.
Was so sorry to hear of Marie's passing. She has been my favorite tax client for 30+ years. I will miss her along with all that knew her. She was a true Christian, probably the truest I have ever know.
A lovely woman! She was such a pleasure to know.
I knew Marie through Hospice. She was a lovely, devoted and caring Christian lady. My condolences to her family. She will be missed by all who knew her. Rest in Peace Marie and God bless!
We were so sorry to learn of Marie's passing. She was a true servant of the Lord and will be missed by all who knew her.
First a lady and then a lady who dedicated her life to the service of others including her country. Such memorable times in her life, including present with the burial of JF Kennedy. I am happy she will be at Arlington Cemetery, where so many persons of service are laid to rest. Blessings to all the family.
We were saddened to hear of Marie's passing but know that she is once again with her husband, James. She was a very kind, loving, and thoughtful woman who truly lived her Christian faith. She will be greatly missed but always remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
Mom was the truest example of a Christian life. She never said an unkind word about anyone and was always graciously supportive of all. She endured many personal hardships with silent strength and was generous in her service to any in need. Her great Light has always been a shining beacon to our family and others to follow. As she always said: "God Bless"
Long the years that the Connett and Gatewood families have shared the joys of close friendships between and among the previous generations and the current generations. The Connett family's loss of Marie, is a loss to myself in Albuquerque NM, Joe in Saint Louis, MO and John in Bethlehem, PA. In our minds, we three brothers will be sitting in the Medley pew of the Church on Friday, sharing the joy of celebrating the life of Marie Connett with the congregation and those other "friends of Marie" who are unable to attend in person. Amen. -Medley, Joe, and John
A candle for the sweetest angel on earth in my life
Marie and my dad(Wendell Phillips) were the same age and knew each other through school and church. She came to visit him after his stroke. She would send cards and visit often. She was admired by so many. We will be there to celebrate her life.
I remember your Mother and Father from Effingham Centenary and how kind they were to me and to my family Carol and Oliver Carlock. Reynolds and I got into "trouble" quite often making paper wads to shoot with a rubber band and once his Dad Jim called us to task during a sermon! I wanted to date Janice and Reynolds said I could not and Marie said it was okay to do so....smiles always. Marie was a great example of one who lived by example of a Christian life. Blessings to the family. Phil Carlock
Marie and my mother were such good friends. I'm sure they will have so many things to catch up on. May she rest in peace. God Bless.
