Visitation:  5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home

William M. "Mart" Haycock Jr., age 81, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015, at Clay County Hospital in Flora.

Mart was born March 1, 1934 in Flora to William Martin and Mary Evelyn (Broiles) Haycock Sr.  He married Sandra Kay Brown on March 27, 1959 in Flora.

Mart was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany.  He attended Illinois State University and Eastern Illinois University to become an educator and administrator.  Mart began his career at McEndree Grade School where he taught and also coached basketball and track, was a math teacher from 1960-1966, and was Principal at Seminary, Lincoln, Xenia, and Washington Schools from 1966-1993.  He also served as the Flora Unit #35 School District Treasurer from 1977-2007.

To say that Mart was an avid Cub fan is an understatement.  He was also a big fan of Country/Western music and had a large collection of cd’s and 78’s.  Mart also enjoyed fishing, especially trout fishing, and going camping with family. The time spent with his grandkids was very special to him.  On Sunday mornings, he would listen to the First Baptist Church service on the radio.

He is survived by his wife: Sandra Haycock of Flora; 2 children: John M. (Lisa) Haycock of Flora and Shelley Kay Myers of Effingham; 2 grandchildren: Jordan (Kristin) Haycock of Madison, AL and Katelyn Haycock of Flora; and a great-grandson: Noah.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and 1 sister: Joyce Morris.

A funeral service for Mart Haycock will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2015, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.  Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora, with military honors.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.  Memorial donations may be given to First Baptist Church or Clay County Cancer Crusaders and will be accepted at the funeral home.  To share a condolence with the family, please visit www.frankandbright.com.

Prayers for the family. Mr. Haycock, always was hard for me to call him Mart, as he was my 7th grade teacher. I have notified the classmates and so many have commented remembering him. Mart always had a smile and when I would call the house for Sandy, he would always joke and say she wasn't there as he was just her secretary. Well Mr. Secretary, sure will miss those calls.

I just learned of Mr. Haycock's passing. I am sorry for your loss. He was my math teacher in the 7th grade, which the best I can figure was 1965. I simply can't call him Mart. There are few teachers whose presence sticks with us for our lives. Mr. Haycock was that for me. He made learning fun and interesting while at the same time he was demanding. I am fortunate to have had a teacher like him.
