Phyllis D. Pickel, age 75, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, at her home in Flora.
Phyllis was born July 24, 1939 in Sterling, Illinois, to Gerald “Jerry” B. and Ethel M. “Granny” (Sisson) Griffith. She married Jack D. Pickel on June 1, 1958 at the Oak Street Baptist Church in Flora. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1999. Phyllis worked as a cook for the Flora Unit #35 School District for 32 years. She loved her church family at New Hope Pentecostal Church and enjoyed family gatherings and cookouts, spending time with her great-granddaughters, singing, and cooking for family.
Phyllis is survived by her son: Mike Pickel and fiancée Karen Smith of Clay City; 3 grandchildren: Emily (Jeramia) Blackwell of Flora, Noel Pickel (fiancée Nathan Whitehead) of Flora, and Noah Pickel of Flora; 2 great-granddaughters: Chloe and Kylie Blackwell; siblings: Edna (Dennis) White of Decatur, Sharon Davis of Flora, Sandy (Don) Blackwell of Flora, Gerald (Penny) Griffith of Greenfield, IN, and Terry (Gary) Lane of Flora; brother-in laws: Bob (Barb) Tackitt of Flora, Jim (Aleta) Tackitt of Flora; sister-in-law: Patti (Morris) Gartman of Flora; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother-in-law: Richard Davis, sister-in-law: Hattie (the late Jim) Ruger, and her in-laws: Harvey and Margaret Tackitt.
In keeping with Phyllis’ wishes, there will be no services. The family has requested that memorial donations may be made to the education fund for the great-grandchildren. Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora is assisting the family with arrangements.

I sure am going to miss talking to Phyllis. I loved her stories, she could see the humor in so much. She could always make me laugh. We love you guys, so sorry for your loss.

Phyliss was such a lovely lady. I worked with her at both Lincoln and the FH Jr. High and she was always so friendly and so much fun. I know she will be missed by her family and many friends. I do extend my sympathy and prayers to the family for strength and comfort in the coming days.
Gone to be sadly miss. Was a sweet and lovable lady. Always talk and waved at me when she would go by the house. When went over to her house always met me a the porch to see what I was doing. Always told me to watch her cats. So sorry Mike Karen and family for the loss of a fantastic lady. She will be missed a lot but will never be forgotten.

Dear Nana, We will sadly miss you but with all the tears and the dark clouds come laughter and sunshine and in the end we will be right there hand and hand step to step so from wherever you may be watch us grow into the grandma that you was to us and in time we will return to that old back porch blowing bubbles and eating hotdogs and laughing till the sun goes down for now and always your great granddaughters WE LOVE YOU

To know Phyllis was to love her! She was kind to everyone she met. I remember taking all those lunches to the men in the field so many years ago. The men never complained, but I know they were glad when it was Phyllis's turn to take the meal!! She was the best cook around! She also bought Brian his first bicycle and it still hangs in our barn. We are certainly going to miss Phyllis.

Phyllis was a wonderful and special lady. We all loved her beautiful smile and her beautiful heart. She never met a stranger...she was always willing to do for others. Phyllis is my cousin, what a shock to hear of her passing. She will be greatly missed. We would talk on the phone and laugh a lot. She used to come to Mt. Vernon and bring her Mother, ( Aunt Ethel) to our church when we had special Friday night services. We have a lot of good memories.
