Betty Lou (Von Tungeln) Brooks, age 85, of Louisville, Illinois, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2015, at Flora Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Flora.
Betty was born on April 23, 1930, in Rock, IL, to Cecil and Rachel (Wright) Von Tungeln. On June 14, 1951, she married James Brooks in Golconda, IL, who preceded her in death on January 12, 1996.
Betty graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Home Economics. She was a Home Economics teacher for 31 years in the Flora, Kinmundy-Alma, and North Clay School Districts, retiring from North Clay having been a FHA advisor and senior class sponsor in addition to teaching. As time permitted, she enjoyed working alongside her husband on their family farm and finding time to crochet and garden. Betty was a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her four children: Judy (Steve) Porter of Louisville, Tom (Janice) Brooks of Louisville, Janet (Larry) Probst of Dieterich, and Joe (Angelia) Brooks of Ponca City, OK; nine grandchildren: Amy (Jeff) Walker, Mandy (Brad) Clark, Larissa (Joe) Goodman, Sarah (Deric) Newby, Nick (Maria) Probst, Jeanna (Levi) Antrim, Tony Probst and fiancé Samantha Janz, Matthew Brooks and fiancé Ashley Durr, and Corey Brooks; two step-grandchildren: Zachery Whitebird and Isaiah Whitebird; eight great-grandchildren: Morgan, Bryce, Zain, Brady, Lucy, Sophia, Samuel, and Henry; three step-great-grandchildren: Kahlan, Jahlynn, and Elijah; one brother: George Von Tungeln of El Paso, TX; sister-in-law: Elizabeth Pontious of St. Peter; along with several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband, James, of 45 years, her parents, two brothers-in-law: Jeff Brooks and Myron Pontious, and sister-in-law: Marilyn Von Tungeln.
A funeral service for Betty Brooks will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2015, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Bro. Dennis Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Bible Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be given to Louisville United Methodist Church or Clay County Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared at www.frankandbright.com.

I am sorry for your loss. I took all of her classes in High School as well as was part of FHA. Joe is my class mate. May she rest in peace. She will be missed. May you find comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and is well again and cooking, sewing and teaching. I am sorry I will not be able to make the services as I have to work.

I admired Mrs. Brooks for her kindness. Some of my best memories were having sleepovers with Janet. At school, I would see her each day in that big home ec room preparing for her classes. I'll always have fond memories of Mrs. Brooks. My sympathy goes to the family.
Betty was a fellow teacher of Family and Consumer Sciences. Betty was a positive influence on the profession and deeply cared about her students. Her faithful service to the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, changed students' lives. May she rest in peace in the arms of her Lord.
