Thomas Joseph Scanlan, age 81, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 9, 1933 to Louis Thomas and Marguerite Elizabeth (Coleman) Scanlan. Tom had an electrical engineering background and worked for Q Circuits. He had attended Lane Tech, Northwestern University, and held a degree from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Tom also held a multi-engine instrument rated pilot’s license and was a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Flora, Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
He is survived by one brother: Rev. Francis Gerald “Father Jerry” Scanlan of St. Damian in Oak Forest; one sister: Margaret Mary “Peg” Scanlan Olson of Chicago; two nephews: Jerry Louis (Rae) Huber and Thomas (Danielle) Huber; one great-niece and two great-nephews: Ryan Huber, Jacqueline Huber, and Nicholas Huber. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Eleanor Ann Scanlan Huber.
A funeral mass for Tom Scanlan will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 2015, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Flora. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. A wake will be held 2-9 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, at Drake & Son Funeral Home in Chicago, with a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 5, at St. Gregory the Great Church in Chicago. Interment will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago. Memorial donations will be accepted in the form of mass contributions. Online condolences may be shared at www.frankandbright.com.
My deepest sympathies to the family of Thomas. He was a co-worker and was such a sweet man. I will miss his laugh and smile.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Tom while I was showing him homes. He was such a sweet man. I told him he needed to retire and he laughed and said Not Yet. He will always bring a smile to my face as I think of him.. Rest in peace
Tom will be missed by his family and friends, especially his brother "Jerry." They were so close, Fr. Jerry often visited his brother and vice versa. May he rest in peace and the angels receive him into Heaven. So very sorry for your loss.

Tom was such a wonderful addition to the St. Stephen parish religion program. He taught 4th grade. He was a committed, passionate teacher and will be missed greatly. Farewell, my friend.
