Don Edwin Lewis, age 79, of Flora, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana.
Don was born on October 3rd, 1936, and always said he didn’t make it very far in life, just across the road. He married Reada Barton on March 11, 1954 in Cisne, and together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. He was a lifetime resident of Flora and lifelong area farmer. Don served numerous positions with the GIRS, a society for the documentation and preservation of Native American Artifacts. He enjoyed spending time with family, and had numerous collecting interests. Don’s love of farming was contagious and inspired future generations to follow in his footsteps.
He is survived by his wife, Reada Lewis of Flora; his children: Dean (Jill) Lewis, Sheri (Scott) Fritschle, Curt (Janet) Lewis, and Tina (Alex) Booth all of Flora; along with 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Roy and Genevieve Lewis. Don was an inspiration to all of his family.
A private funeral service will be held for Don Lewis with interment in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given to Clay County Hospice. Reada and family, I am so sorry for your loss, you are in my prayers.
Tina, Alex and Olivia, Reada -- and the entire Lewis family, Sending you big hugs, prayers and love as you remember Don. He was a strong man who led an amazing family with love, conviction and a quiet grace. I will always remember hanging out at your house on weekends when I was growing up in Flora. Don was always focused on the farm...but always had time to have a laugh with us. For a girl from town... there was a lot to laugh about when I was with Tina for the weekend. I can't believe all the events Tina and I planned and hosted in your machine shed... he had to think... these crazy girls.... what are they up to next. I know there are many moments that you all will hold dear... I hope the good times and the memories comfort you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Our deepest sympathies to the Lewis families.
Don was a fellow collector of Indian artifacts, and his light was strong in that community. He shared his artifacts at the many shows he attended and inspired many collectors. I personally remember him at show after show inviting collectors to sign up for Prehistoric American Magazine as they passed by his tables. I think he alone signed up more than a thousand members over the years, more than anyone ever. He assembled one of the finest collections in the nation and collectors would "ooh and ah" whenever he set up a display. He will be missed by many.
So sorry for your family's loss. Thoughts and prayers to all the family.
