Donald Lee Berger, age 77, of Effingham, Illinois, formerly of Flora, passed away Tuesday morning, June 14, 2016, at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.
Don was born July 3, 1938 in Noble, the son of Edward and Jessie (Jenner) Berger. He was united in marriage to Carolyn M. Pearce on April 3, 1965 at Harmony United Methodist Church in Flora and together they celebrated 51 wedding anniversaries.
Don worked at AMF/Roadmaster in Olney for many years. He enjoyed attending Golden Circle in Effingham and Flora, was an avid Cubs fan, and enjoyed playing and watching sports, including baseball, basketball, softball, and bowling.
Don is survived by his wife: Carolyn Berger of Effingham; children: Harvey Berger, Pamela Stein of Evansville, IN, Jerry Berger of Effingham, and Kelly (Daphne) Berger of Los Altos, CA; 5 grandchildren: Tamara, Brett, Ethan, Lucas, and Megan; 7 siblings: Mary Lou (the late Steve) Murry of Olney, Glen (Jeri) Berger of Olney, Dale (Evelyn) Berger of Olney, Clarence (the late Pat) Berger of Noble, Wayne (Judy) Berger of Olney, Ruth (the late Harold) Troyer of Olney, and Carolyn (Loren) Gallion of Noble; mother-in-law: Aliene (the late Harold) Pearce of Flora; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson: Brock, son-in-law: Mark Stein, a brother: Lloyd Berger, and a sister: Kathryn Marks.
A funeral service for Don Berger will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with visitation one hour prior, from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Memorial donations are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children and will be accepted at the funeral home.
To all the family, we are so terribly sorry to hear the news of Don's death. Don and Carolyn were such wonderful neighbors, living next door to us for many years. Our hearts go out to all of you. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
So sorry for your loss, Don was a terrific man and I always enjoyed talking with him.

Carolyn, I was really sorry to hear the news of Don's passing. Even though you all have lived in Effingham a while, I still remember seeing Don riding his bike all those years when you all lived here, always with a smile and a wave of the hand as your paths crossed. Not many of our "Southenders" left...:( My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Sorry to hear about Don. Enjoyed working with him over at AMF for about 9 years. Car pooling, etc. He always had such a happy outlook on life.
