Mary June Hosselton of Clay City, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2016, at the Deaconess Hospital Hospice Center in Evansville, Indiana.
Mary was the daughter of Oba Abner Garrison Sr. and Alice Coral (Cypret) Garrison born on September 14, 1932, in Oregon County near Myrtle, Missouri. Mary’s parents and family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in the 1940’s where Mary attended high school and worked as a teenager at a drug store soda fountain. After moving from Kansas City, Mary resided in Centralia, Illinois as a housewife and was a volunteer at the hospital, was active in the school PTA, and played bridge in the local Bridge Club.
She worked for the Midwest Truckers Association in the 1970’s with an office in Salem, Illinois and she was the secretary and field representative for the tri state area of southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and northern Kentucky assisting truckers with membership, insurance, permits, licenses, and sold truck tires.
She married Claren Hosselton on March 17, 1979. They moved to rural Clay City and Mary was a housewife helping build a home, helping in the garden, the yard, the flowers, and helped on the farm where she shared 37 years of marriage and raised a son, Lee. Mary painted on canvas and attended Carol Phillips painting class where she became acquainted with some wonderful ladies that helped welcome her to the community. She was a member of the lovely Clay City Garden Club. Mary was a collector of Terri Lee dolls and attended Terri Lee Doll Conventions held in various major cities and won some awards with her dolls. She cared and loved her children and family and was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and enjoyed being with family and friends. She leaves a sense of loss, sadness, and sorrow and will certainly be missed.
Survivors include her husband Claren of Clay City; a daughter, Sherry (Peterson) Newton-Lence (husband Greg) of Anna, IL; a son, Lee Hosselton (wife Ashley) of Clay City; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Thomas) Peterson-Piontkowski (husband Gary) of Ft. Myers, FL; five grandchildren: Kane Newton (wife Beth) of LeRoy, IL, Kenton “KC” Newton of Carterville, IL, Skyler and Dexter Peterson of Ft. Myers, FL, Dustin Peterson (wife Rene`e) of Avoca, NY; one step-granddaughter, Cally McGrath (husband John) of Anna, IL; four great grandchildren: Aaron Martell, Jessica Newton, Madaline and Arabella Peterson; one step-great-granddaughter, Meriel McGrath of Anna, IL; one sister, Martha Alice Watts of Kansas City, MO; two brothers-in-law: Kenneth Bears of Morrisville, MO, and Larry Hosselton (wife Kay) of Clay City; four sisters-in-law: Rosemary Mainprize of Thayer, MO, Shirley Macdougal of Grandview, MO, Margaret Garrison of Independence, MO, and Margaret R. Garrison of Arkansas; twenty one nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and many friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Oba and Alice Garrison; father and mother-in-law, Cletis and Wilma Hosselton; a husband, Donald Peterson; a son, Richard Eugene “Rick” Peterson; great granddaughter, Madalyn Taylor; two sisters: Geneva Levene Bears and Joyce Irene Taylor; two brothers, Oba Abner “Junior” Garrison Jr. and Vern William Garrison Sr.; three brothers-in-law: Virgil Lovell, Toby Watts, and Grover Taylor; three nephews: Dewayne Lovell, Trenton Garrison, and Gary Garrison; infant sister, Juanita Garrison; and infant brother, David Paul Garrison.
Funeral arrangements for Mary Hosselton are in the care of Frank & Bright Funeral Home, 500 N. Main St. (south of Route 50 and CVS) in Flora, Illinois. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 20, at the funeral home with burial following in Zif Cemetery south of Clay City in Wayne County. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, August 19, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zif Cemetery Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice and these will be accepted at the funeral home.
