Alma Jean “Jeanie” Briscoe, age 92, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016, at the BeeHive Homes of Bosque Farms, New Mexico.
Jeanie was born in Caddo, Texas, on April 25, 1924, to Zina E. and Sarah Margaret Brammer. She was the youngest of three children.
Jeanie’s early days were spent in Texas. She often recalled her memories of walking barefoot in the hot soil, smelling the bluebells, and the local Methodist Church where she was baptized. In her high school years, the family moved to Flora, Illinois, following the oil boom. It was there she graduated from Flora Township High School and met the love of her life, James L. “Dode” Briscoe. On January 5, 1946, they were united in marriage in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. In the 1950’s, Jeanie and Dode became the proud owners of Briscoe Farm Store & Mill, which they owned and operated for over 35 years, and Jeanie acted as book-keeper. In 1955, Jeanie and Dode started their family, and in their traditional style of loving and giving, adoption was a great choice. The first child, Doug, was adopted followed by Debbie in 1961.
Jeanie participated in many community activities and events including Garden Club, Clay County Republican Women, Women’s Club, Cancer Society, Library Board, and Scout Leader. She was a 70 year member of the First Christian Church in Flora where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Leader. Jeanie also loved working in her yard and had a beautiful rose garden. When in her 80’s, Jeanie became interested in the history and founders of Flora. She spent many years researching and later wrote and published a book about Flora. Jeanie’s later years were spent at Heritage Woods of Flora, where she enjoyed visiting with staff, other residents, and participating in activities. The last few months of her life were spent in New Mexico to be closer to family for the extra needed care. Jeanie lived her life for God and country, family, and community.
She is survived by her children: Doug (wife Kathy) Briscoe of St. Peter, Missouri, and Debbie Greenwood of Los Lunas, New Mexico; three grandchildren: Eric (Amanda) Bright of Charleston, Illinois, and Benjamin Greenwood and Bethany (Adam) Dunstan both of Los Lunas, New Mexico; four great-grandchildren: Kyle, Quienton, Luke, and Katherine; brother-in-law: Charles "Wheezer" Briscoe; sister-in-law: Maxine Jones; special family: niece Shannon (Ray) Rutland, nephew Bobby (Diane) Briscoe, Trena Briscoe Martin; and many, many other nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her caregivers: Peggy, Betty, and Denna. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband; parents; two sisters, Ernestine Brown and Billie Speake; and a nephew John Brown.
A memorial service for Jeanie Briscoe will be 3 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016, at the First Christian Church, Flora, with a visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Oil Belt Christian Service Camp and these will be accepted through the funeral home.

Doug, Debbie and Families: We are sorry for your loss. Bud knew your mother because of your dad and I met her in 1984 when we moved back to Flora. She and I served together for quite some time on the Anerican Cancer Society board. I always enjoyed her and was happy to be her friend from then on. I'll always remember her smile, her contributions to her community and her love for her family. She is with her beloved Dode and that makes me smile. They are rejoicing in Heaven ❤️ RIP Jeanie

Jeanie was such a pleasant lady. Friendly to everyone. Our condolences to her family. RIP, Jeanie
My condolences to Jeanie's family. I was saddened to learn of her passing and was thinking about her a few months ago when passing through Flora. I got to know Jeanie well through my parents. I recall that Dad was involved with Jeanie in many Clay County activities including fund-raising for the new Flora Library. I last saw Jeanie in the library using their computers to research family history prior to Mom's passing in late 2007. God Bless Jeanie and her family. May those of us who knew her celebrate her life and contributions to Flora and the County.
So Sorry for your loss. She was a Good Christian Woman!!
We are sorry for your loss. God Bless.
Comfort to the family. My memories of Jeanie are connected to her faithful service at Flora Christian Church, where she mentored we girls through her leadership in a service group. We made many holiday favors and went together to nursing homes to deliver them and spend a little time with the patients. She was patient and kind and thoughtful and did it all with a smile. She led us to JOY...Jesus first, others second, yourself last.
Jeanie was one of the to make me feel welcome at the First Christian Church. Beautiful inside and out. Love Jodi
Jeanie was a wonderful lady to know and call friend. Jeanie always had a great smile and kind words for everyone she met . We recall working with Jeanie many times to help her find convalescent supplies for cancer patients . She was an energetic and tireless worker for the American Cancer Society and for many many fund raising events in Flora and Clay County. Judie and I will have Doug, Debbie, and all of yours family in our thoughts and prayers.
I am so sorry. Please know that you are all in my heart.

So sorry to hear about Jeanie's passing. She was my cafeteria buddy several years at CCH. Enjoyed numerous chats with her. Great Lady! Jeanie also assisted me & the hospital documenting their history. Prayers for family!
I am sorry for your loss. Ms Jeanie was so sweet and funny. I loved seeing her every day at work. I often would tell her, "You're a crazy lady but I love ya". She is greatly missed.
Debbie, Very sorry to read about Jeannie. She went to school with my Dad. A very nice lady.
You all have my heartfelt sympathies. What a special lady Jeannie was....I know she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Our condolences to all the family members. I have known Jeanie and Dode (God Bless His Soul) Briscoe, since I was 10 years old, and went to work for Dode when I was 11. I spent many nights at there home when I was growing up, getting up at 3 or 4 AM to head to the coal mines in Southern Illinois. We would get a truck load of coal, bring back to Flora to deliver to various people. Jeanie always had breakfast ready, and a lunch packed for me. I have a lot of great memories of Jeanie and she will be missed. May God Bless Her.
SHE WILL BE MISSED A WONDERFUL LADY.
Debby and Doug, My condolences. It is so hard to lose our dear mothers. My mom, Edna Sefton, also lived at Heritage Woods for many years along with your mother. Edna passed away at age 93 earlier this year. Thinking of you both.
So sorry to learn of Jeanie's passing. I enjoying knowing her and working with her on various project concerning Flora and/or the National WWII Memorial and its Registry of Remembrances. She'll be missed by many in our community. I wish I'd known that she was at BeeHive Homes of Bosque Farms as we live only a few miles from there.
So sorry for your loss!
Jeanie was such a faithful member at First Christian Church in Flora. I (Sherry) remember the girls' Teen Circle that Jeanie led. We reported on missionaries and had a Bible study each week. She has been involved in so many things over the years it is amazing. Dan and I enjoyed visiting with Jeanie in her later years. The conversations were usually more about her concern for others than for herself. May God bless your family with good memories.
Doug and Debbie. Your mother has a special place in my heart. She was an amazing lady and I'm thankful for the memories I have of her. Sending love and prayers to all of you. So sorry for your lose.
Jeanie was a wonderful lady. Thoughts and prayers with the family.
