John Richard (Jack) Meyer, 93, Flora, Illinois, died November 8, 2016, after a short illness. He was born in Olney, Illinois on April 5, 1923 to Ralph and Lena Meyer.
He was predeceased by his wife Ruth Ann. He is survived by his children, Carol (Mark) Cabaj, Normal, IL, Paul (Julie) Meyer, Kansas City, MO, and Janet (Gregg) Dixon, Fairhope, AL, and 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Jack completed both his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He and Ruth Ann were married during World War II when he was serving in the Navy. He joined his father Ralph in their law partnership in Flora in 1947. Jack served as the Flora city attorney, Republican Chairman of Clay County, precinct committeeman, and also as Special Assistant to the Attorney General of Illinois. He acted as city judge up into his eighties. After 57 years of practicing law, Jack closed his law office but never would say he was retired.
Jack served as an Elder of the First Christian Church of Flora for over 40 years. He was a Trustee on the Board of Trustees of Lincoln Christian College 50 years. He was a member of the board of directors of the Phillippine Mission Churches of Christ and also was instrumental in the establishment of Oil Belt Christian Service Camp 70 years ago. He also served as Missions Committee chairman for First Christian Church for several years.
He was an avid fan of jazz music and enjoyed going to jazz festivals. He loved dark chocolate, Ruthie’s cooking, and his nightly bowl of ice cream. He lovingly cared for Ruthie (“the best thing that ever happened to me”), and was a loving father, and a faithful, persevering, servant of God.

I had the honor of knowing your mom and dad. I worked with him at City hall and he always spoke so fondly of her. I know they are dancing in heaven, together again. Thoughts and prayers for you all.
Janet, Carol, Paul - I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with your family.
Jack was a great example of what a Christian man, father, and husband were to be. I was very lucky to have enjoyed the hospitality of the Meyer home. That of course meant listening to Jack's jazz music and enjoying the graciousness of Ruthann at the dinner table. Jack was never bashful about his love for the church. He had a passion for the church to live the great commission. He was both a friend and mentor to me and my family. My prayers are with Carol, Paul, and Janet at this time of celebration.
So sorry for your loss of your loved one. Jack and Ruth Ann were always good neighbors and friends to our mom Betty Garrison. She passed last Thursday November 3rd. So they will be neighbors again in heaven. God rest their souls
We are sorry for your loss. Mr. Meyer was a fine man who will be missed by those who knew him. Prayers for the family.
Paul, Carol, Janet and Families: Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers in the loss of your dad. We enjoyed knowing him. He gave his time and talents to his church and community and will be missed. God bless y'all. RIP Jack
So for this loss
We are both very sorry for your loss. Both of us knew your father well and know that the family as well as friends will miss him.
We are very sad at the passing of Jack. Our prayers for your family.
Jack was always such a nice man and treated everyone with such respect both socially and professionally. He will be missed.
Carol, Paul & Janet- Sorry for the loss of your dad. So many memories fill my mind of working so closely with Jack and the many many things he taught me in the almost 24 years I worked for him as a legal secretary. Your dad was the finest Christian boss I could ever have asked for and loved to tell stories of his war-time service and everything in the past he knew about his hometown, Flora, and the time he lived in Washington, D.C. with his parents and brother. He was a kind soul and will be missed.
sorry for your loss from his paper carriers
We are sorry to learn of the loss of your Father. He was a true gentleman and certainly will be missed by all who knew him.
Carol, Paul, Janet--My thoughts are with you during this time. I had great respect and admiration for your parents. They were both strong pillars of the church and set unforgettable examples of what a Christian should be. It is comforting to know they are in heaven with the Father and many they worshipped with here on earth. May God bless each one of you.
Mr. Meyer built a house in 1957 that was to remain my parent's home for nearly 60 years. We never forgot him and what he was able to give our family with his talent. Our family shares in your loss with you. May he rest with Our Lord.
Jack and Ruth were great neighbors. They will be missed by all. Jack always had words of wisdom to tell ya when we would visit.
Prayers & love to Carol, Janet & Paul for your loss! Respect for each of you & guidance of your parents bringing God into your lives & numerous others.
Carol, Paul and Janet, I'm sorry to hear your Dad has passed on. He was a man of many accomplishments, but I remember him most for how he admired and loved your Mother. He was very proud of his family. I enjoyed being challenged as a student in his Bible School class years ago. Thinking of you and your families as you grieve together.
Thoughts and prayers to this family. Jack and Ruth Ann were a very influential part of my life growing up in the First Christian Church. Highest regards, Sheila
Carol, Paul and Janet So sorry to hear of your loss. Your mom and dad have been dear friends of the family for many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I am so happy that our paths crossed at the Decatur Jazz Festival for the opportunity to meet Jack and his grandson, Daniel. Such special, super, nice people. So sorry for your loss of this extra-ordinary man.
We were out of town for a few days, when we heard of Jack's passing. Remembering, when he heard that I had a similar medical issue to his, he was right there offering assistance. He told me of his experience and his research on the subject. He was a great advocate of MD Anderson. He was a highly intelligent and humble gentlemen. I always enjoyed our time together. He truly loved Ruthie. We will miss your folks as neighbors. Blessings to all.
I only met Jack at Ruth's funeral and had a conversation with him. It was a very enjoyable conversation. What an interesting man. I am a friend of Carol and Mark Cabaj and have known them for years. I am so sorry for your loss but know he is with his wife in a better place. Mark spoke of him often over the last 20 years of his war days up through his lawyer days and retirement. He was a very remarkable man. Our prayers are with you. Ed and Marcy
