Jewell “Yates” McGrew, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Saturday evening, November 12, 2016, at Flora Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Flora.
Yates was born October 12, 1925, in Wayne County, the son of Dewey and Grace (Jordan) McGrew. He married Carolyn Harms on April 25, 1959, in Mt. Vernon. She preceded him in death on November 15, 2006. Yates worked at Roadmaster in Olney, did road construction, and operated the M&M Spot Tavern. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper.
Yates is survived by 2 sons: Randy McGrew of Effingham and Rick (Trish) McGrew of Flora; 7 grandchildren: Michelle McGrew, Lydia (Travis) Vawter, Samantha Yancy, Anthony Yancy, J.R. Highsmith, Tim Highsmith, and Shane Highsmith; several great-grandchildren along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; step-son: Jerry Highsmith; 2 brothers: Tony and Gerald McGrew; and 2 sisters: Vivian McGrew and Betty Wattles.
A funeral service for Yates McGrew will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors. A visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be given to the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans) and will be accepted at the funeral home.

We are so sorry about Yates' passing. We called on him many times representing the American Legion.
My condolences to the family of Yates. It has been many yrs since I last spoke with him. My family lived not far from his family and I knew him from The Spot Tavern. RIP
