Carrie Virland Thompson, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Sunday night, February 19, 2017, at Flora Gardens Care Center.
She was born March 7, 1925, the daughter of John Oscar and Rosa (Etchason) Martin in O’Kean, Arkansas. She married Burrell Thompson on September 20, 1947, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and they shared 52 years of marriage. He preceded her in death May 30, 2000.
Carrie had worked at Sparton Manufacturing. To put her love for cooking to use, she operated Carrie’s Country Cooking for several years. Later, she began a quilting business where she crafted quilts for friends and family. Carrie was well-known for her delicious pies, baking them for Julian’s for over 20 years, with coconut as a longtime customer favorite. She was a member of Flora Church of the Nazarene where she participated in the Friendship Sunday School class.
She is survived by a daughter: Carolyn Scott of Flora; a son: Martin (Nancy) Thompson of Flora; grandsons: Tyler (Carrie) Scott of Yale, Michigan, Clayton Scott of Olney, Ryan (Angie) Scott of Flora, Steve (Amy) Blandford of Marion, David Blandford of Atlanta, Georgia, and Sterling Thompson of Flora; great-grandchildren: Desirae (Chris) Cavataio of Yale, Michigan, Blain and Chase Scott of Yale, Michigan, Drew Scott of Murray, Kentucky, Christopher, Paige, & Mariah Scott of Flora, Dalton and Riley Blandford of Marion, and Cole Blandford of Atlanta, Georgia; great-great-grandsons: Aiden and Connor Cavataio of Yale, Michigan; a sister-in-law: Dollie Pearson of Edwardsville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son: Ronnie Blandford; a son-in-law: Ronald Scott; brothers: Howard (Virland) Martin, Tom (Ruby) Martin, Cecil (Grace) Martin; sisters: Hazel (Harry) Rickey and Lucille (Dorris) Kerby.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will be in Floral Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Flora Church of the Nazarene.
Carolyn,Ryan ,Tyler and your families and all the family, We extend our thoughts and prayers to you all. We enjoyed talking with Carrie, and picking berries for her good pies. She was one of a kind. Rest in peace Carrie, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

I am sorry for your loss. I loved your mom. When our daughter was young she invited us over to teach us how to make pies. I tried taking notes but her hands moved so fast my eyes blurred. She made the best pies I have ever eaten and many of her pies were enjoyed by our family. Thank you for sharing her with me.

Carolyn, we enjoyed the many meals we ate with Carrie over the years at lunch time. Carrie always made us smile and was a wonderful lady. We will miss her.

We are thinking of you all, praying that you will be comforted by all the memories, and knowing she is at peace and happy now.

Sweet lady who loved her family. Always friendly. I met her when I worked with Carolyn at the health dept and enjoyed talking with her at Julians. I will remember her lovely smile. God be with you and comfort you all with beautiful memories.
I will miss seeing Ms. Carrie on Willow Lane. She was a sweetheart!
