Betty M. Wathan, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at Clay County Hospital in Flora.
Betty was born August 5, 1926, the daughter of Wayne D. and Maude E. (Blackwell) McVeigh. She married William A. "Bill" Wathan on May 1, 1949, in Flora, and together they shared 38 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on November 10, 1987.
Betty grew up on a dairy farm in Clay County and attended Lincoln School which at that time was a one room school house with the same teacher. She later went on to graduate from Flora High School. Betty had several work experiences during her life including working for Dr. Dillman, Dr. Fehrenbacher, and Dr. Webb; she worked at Sears Roebuck in Kankakee and Flora and also at JC Penney; and even sold cars at one time. Betty did bookkeeping for her husband’s oil field work and in later years was a caregiver to her husband. She also enjoyed playing cards and was in 2 Pinochle Clubs. She was raised in the Christian Church, was a past member of North Harter Christian Church, and most recently a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Flora. It was truly Betty’s hope that people would see Jesus in the life she led.
She is survived by her son: William Asher Wathan (wife Teresa) of Columbia; daughter-in-law: Cheryl Wathan of Louisville; 4 grandchildren: Jamie Wathan, Michael Wathan, Brandon Wathan, and Nikki (Brian) Vinyard; and 4 great-grandchildren: Austin, Hunter, Natalie, and Gabriella.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son: Andy Wayne Wathan; 2 brothers: Robert and Charles McVeigh; and 4 sisters: Geneva Caldwell, Francis Wilson, Kathryn Vaughan, and Genell McDaniel.
A funeral service for Betty Wathan will be held 12 Noon Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the service time on Saturday. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial donations in Betty’s memory may be given to Clay County Hospital Auxiliary and will be accepted at the funeral home.
My deepest sympathy to the family. Betty was a very sweet woman and will be missed by many. Cherish the memories!
So sorry to hear about Betty's passing. She was such a nice lady and she was fun to be with. I didn't know her as well as I would have liked, but I met her through Wanda Belcher who was good friends with Betty. It is sad that both of these lovely ladies are gone now, but I have good memories of them both. Rest in Peace Betty and know that you had good friends in this life.

In thoughts and prayers.
Betty and I were neighbors when she lived on her farm west of Flora. It seemed like she was always involved in something and got me involved with her. So many happy days were spent with her and "our" little business. Asher and family: My deepest condolences to you as you mourn the passing of a great lady who goes on to meet her Lord.

Aunt Betty was always ready with a funny "quip", and I will always remember her for her great sense of humor. Even last summer when we visited, she was still making us laugh! We will all miss her, but she is now free from physical infirmities and I am happy for her! Thank you Lord for Hope!

When we lose a loved one here on earth, we gain an angel in heaven that watches over us. Look back on all the good memories you had and smile. Don't forget when we had to hide the black olives and deviled eggs when all of us got together. My heart and prayers go out to Asher, Michael and the rest of the family. I'm sorry that I will not be able to be there.
Will miss you terribly but know you are peaceful and no longer suffering at all. Bless you for being a wonderful, loving aunt. Love and blessings to our family.
Heaven gained an angel. Even though you grieve for your loss you can take comfort in knowing that she is pain free. I thought Grandma Betty was a sweet woman and I will always remember how she loved those brown farm eggs.
