George Lee Travis, age 79, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018, surrounded by loving family at his home.
George was born July 15, 1938, in Clay City, the son of Chester and Marie (Bullard) Travis. He married Nancy Ann Stanford on September 29, 1962, at Harmony United Methodist Church south of Flora, and together they have shared 55 years of marriage.
George served in the U.S. Army in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis while stationed in Everglades National Park. After his discharge in 1967, George and Nancy remained in South Florida until retiring and moving to Flora in 2002. After 30+ years working in electrical supply sales, he retired from McDonald Electrical Distributors in 2002. George had been a charter member and trustee of the Village United Methodist Church in North Lauderdale, Florida, and after returning to Illinois in retirement, he and Nancy became members of Flora First United Methodist Church. George enjoyed working on computers, spending time gardening, and attending family reunions. His faithful friend and companion was his dog, Bosco, and without a doubt, his grandkids were his true pride and joy.
He is survived by his wife: Nancy Travis of Flora; a daughter: Angela Beth (Vincent) Scara of Flora; 3 grandchildren: Jacob Vincent Scara, Jessica Ann Scara, and Jewell Beth Scara; 1 great-grandchild: Nevaeh Jade; 1 brother: John (Linda) Travis of McLeansboro; 1 sister: Kay (Jim) Reynolds of Clay City; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Frank and Jewell Stanford.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Flora First United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial donations be given to either Clay County Cancer Support Group or Clay County Hospice. Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora assisted the family with arrangements.
