Melissa Modean (Koontz) Brink “Granny Mo”, age 84, of Flora, IL died at 12:55 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Flora Rehab & Healthcare Center in Flora.
Modean was born November 28, 1928 in Big Flat, AR to Penzel and Lily (Treat) Young. She married Walter Koontz in 1948 in Flora and he preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Burl Brink on May 19, 1990 in Flora. He preceded her in death on April 18, 2006.
During her life, Modean worked at several local businesses and factories. She was a devoted Christian who loved and supported her family. She and Walter had previously been active at First Church of God but later she attended First Christian Church. Modean had a wonderful sense of humor and was well liked by the residents and staff at the nursing home and the Burge House. She loved to sing in church and her favorite pastime activities included crafts, flower arranging, gardening, and tending to her yard and flower beds.
She is survived by 2 sons: David Koontz (wife Trudy) of Flora, Stephen Koontz (wife Roberta) of Robinson; 1 daughter: Terry Igert (husband Rick) of Flora; 6 grandchildren: Michelle Klein, Bret Koontz, Kari Thackrey, Erik Koontz, Wendy Igert, Ashlee Hildebrand; and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, 3 brothers (Gerald, Max, and Rex Young), and 1 sister (Wilamae “Bil” DeVore).
The funeral service for Melissa Modean (Koontz) Brink “Granny Mo” will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home. The family had requested that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Clay County Cancer Crusaders.
