Lois Jean Bates, age 92, of Clay City, Illinois passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at her home in Clay City.
Lois was born January 28, 1922 in Wayne County, Illinois to James Carl and Izora (Graindstaff) Hubble. She married Roscoe L. Bates on November 14, 1938 in Fairfield. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2011.
Lois did custodial work at Clay City Grade School. In 1964, Bates Repair Shop opened and she worked with Roscoe in their business as secretary/bookkeeper and helped wherever needed. Lois and Roscoe were also founding members of Clay City Community Southern Baptist Church and she was also a member of Eastern Star. Lois kept busy all the time and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, needlepoint, and gardening.
She is survived by two sons: Donald L. Bates (wife Rhonda) of Houston, TX and Thomas E. Bates Sr. (wife Deborah) of Clay City; two sisters: Corrine Delano of Sulphur, LA and Mary Runyon (husband Norman) of Olney; 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter (Martha Jean Wright), two brothers (Neil Hubble and James Hubble), and a sister (Juessia Defend).
The funeral service for Lois Bates will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in the Clay City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be given to Clay City Community Southern Baptist Church and will be received at the funeral home.
