Hazel M. Hillyer, age 85, of Xenia, Illinois passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Odin Health Care Center in Odin, Illinois.
Hazel was born November 30, 1928 in Rinard, Illinois to Thomas O. Strange Sr. and Millie Mary (Reynolds) Strange. She married Eugene J. Hillyer on September 6, 1947. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1980. Hazel worked as a cook and was also employed at the Shoe Factory and Sparton’s. She later became an insurance agent, holding an insurance license for United American, and had a Ham Radio license, technician class. Hazel was a member of Xenia Christian Church and loved helping people. Quilting was very important to her and as a member of the Xenia “Helping Hands” Quilters, quilts were made and donated to Xenia Christian Church and Xenia Fire Department. She also enjoyed cooking, canning, and gardening.
Hazel is survived by her daughter: Mary Ann Hillyer of Centralia; her son: Dale E. Hillyer of Xenia; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters (Virginia Paris, Eldon Strange, Thomas Strange, Beulah Langhans, Gaylen Strange, Lester Strange, Vera Wheeler, and Jennell Hillyer), and companion Frank Burkett.
The funeral service for Hazel Hillyer will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Xenia.
