William Robert “Bill” Humphrey, age 84, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Friday, December 25, 2015, at his home in Flora.
Bill was born December 16, 1931, in Birch Tree, MO, the only child of William Thomas and Lucretia Ovene (Nicholson) Humphrey. He married Dorothy “Dot” Humphrey.
Bill went to University of Missouri at Columbia, MO where he studied for a year before working a year. Then he transferred to Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, where he graduated with an accounting degree. Bill was employed by Wetterau in St. Louis, MO, as an accountant. He moved his family to Flora in 1972, purchasing the IGA and later selling the store and retiring after over 20 years of operation in 1993. Bill was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity and a 43 year member of the Flora Elks Lodge #1659. In his spare time, he enjoyed the outdoors and golfing and was also an avid follower of the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Rams.
Bill is survived by one son: William Arthur (Tamara) Humphrey of Mt. Carmel; two daughters: Lisa (Steve) Persinger of Flora and Julie (Scott) Welge of Chapel Hill, NC; 3 grandchildren: Mandi (Brian) Robinson of Palm Harbor, FL, and Morgan and Cassidy Welge of Chapel Hill, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service for Bill Humphrey will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with visitation from 6 p.m. until the hour of service on Tuesday. Memorial donations may be given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and will be accepted at the funeral home.
