Alva Joyce Benskin, age 89, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away Tuesday morning, February 28, 2017, at Flora Gardens Care Center in Flora.
She was born November 10, 1927, in Clay County, the daughter of Orville and Ethel Grace (Gill) Benskin. Joyce was employed at several factories during her working years including Four Sisters Manufacturing in Flora, International Shoe Company in Olney, R.C. Allen Typewriter in Woodstock, and Sparton Manufacturing in Flora. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Senior Sunday School Class of the church. Joyce enjoyed bowling and cooking, and was known for her delicious fudge, divinity, and cinnamon rolls. She was known by all as an avid quilter. Also, she and her sister, Marjorie, made many bibs and lap throws for residents at nursing homes over the years.
Joyce is survived by a son: Dale Stanford and wife Joan of Flora; a daughter: Colene Wood of Buffalo; a sister: Marjorie Murbarger of Clay City; five grandchildren: Bradley Alan Stanford, Crystal Lynn Lancaster, Amber Jo Stanford, Casey Jay Wood, Kassie Joetta Wood; and four great-grandchildren: Destinee, Wyatt, Peyton, and Harper. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son: Bradley.
A funeral service for Joyce Benskin will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 3, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with Pastor Jill Bunker officiating. Interment will be in Kneff Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to National Kidney Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
