Donald Songer, age 85, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Monday afternoon, June 12, 2017, at his home in Flora.
Don was a graduate of Flora High School and attended Southern Illinois University and Indiana Tech. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was an industrial engineer for several companies. After retirement, he took great pride in taking care of his yard and home. Family was important to Don, and he enjoyed attending get-togethers, and also spending time on the family farm. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, and past member of the Eagles and Moose.
He was born January 15, 1932, in Clay County, the son of Glen Roy and Angie Mildred (Winters) Songer.
He is survived by his companion: Eula Henderson Berry of Flora, with whom he shared 43 years together. He is also survived by a son: Keith (wife Carlena) Songer of Crown Point, Indiana; a grandson: Zachary Songer; stepchildren: Nick Berry, Cindy O’Ryan, and Allen Berry; 5 step-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren; a sister: June (husband Sheldon) Smith of Xenia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: William Lee Songer, and Charles (wife Doris) Songer; and a sister: Virginia (husband Alfred) Nichols.
A private service with military honors will be held prior to interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Xenia. Memorials are suggested to Clay County Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice and these will be accepted through the funeral home.
