Mark D. Powless, age 89, of Xenia, Illinois, passed away Monday, August 21, 2017, at his home.
He was born August 10, 1928, in Xenia, the son of Charles Benjamin and Gladys L. (Smothers) Powless. He was united in marriage to Opal Goad on July 1, 1947, in Xenia, and they truly shared a wonderful life together for 65 years. Opal passed away September 3, 2012.
Mark worked as a plasterer and was a skilled concrete finisher. He raised cattle and had enjoyed farming, hunting, and fishing.
Mark is survived by 3 daughters: Shirley Cartright of Flora, Linda (Lonnie) Ward of Xenia, and Carolyn (Jim) Taylor of Xenia; 4 grandchildren: Andy (Tina) Cartright of Newton, Jeff (Amy) Cartright of Flora, Randy Ward of Xenia, and Erik Slover of Seattle, Washington; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Opal Powless, a grandson: Jacob Cartright; and 2 sisters: Freeta Cates and Nova Akes.
A funeral service for Mark Powless will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Xenia. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers or gifts, please make a memorial donation in Mark’s memory to Clay County Hospice, which will be accepted through the funeral home.
