Richard Eugene Dunnigan, age 83, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday morning, January 9, 2018, at Flora Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.
Richard was born September 15, 1934, in Flora, the son of Bernard Charles “Chief” Dunnigan and Mary Ellen (Thompson) Dunnigan. He was united in marriage to Barbara J. Grove in September 1959, at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Flora, and together they shared 58 years of marriage.
Richard became an electrician in 1959 and in 1965 he started and operated R.E. Dunnigan Electrical Service for 45 years. He served in the Army from 1955-1957 following the Korean Conflict, assisting with peacekeeping activities. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, a member of Flora American Legion, and a past member of Flora Eagles. Richard had a great sense of humor, enjoyed his grandkids, and followed the Chicago Cubs and NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife: Barbara Dunnigan of Flora; 2 sons: Mark Dunnigan and Darin (Krystal) Dunnigan all of Flora; a grandson: Jarin (Ashley) Dunnigan; a granddaughter: Janae Dunnigan; 2 great-grandchildren: Jazlyn and Isaac; 1 brother: Bernard (Catherine) Dunnigan of Flora; and in-laws: Mary Lou Wright of Belleville, Arlene Dunnigan of Geff, Carroll Simpson of Howell, MI, and Jim (Linda) Grove of Flora. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 brothers: Leo, Charles, and John.
A funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018, at St. Stephen Catholic Church and interment will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Memorials are suggested to Clay County Hospice and these will be accepted through the funeral home.
