Ellen Mae (Smith) Coble, 84, of Xenia, Illinois, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at 8:10 p.m. She was born August 14, 1934, in Xenia, to Roscoe and Mae (O’Brien) Smith. She was married to James Russell Coble on October 6, 1951, in Salem, and they shared 39 years of marriage prior to his death on November 21, 1990.
Ellen will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked and retired as a Nurse’s Aide on the OB wing at the old Clay County Hospital, and many doctors, nurses, and patients of Clay County will have memories of her. Ellen was a member of Emory Street Church, an Evangelical Methodist Church in Flora. She loved spending time with family and friends and reading mystery books.
Ellen is survived by 4 children: David Coble of Xenia, George (Helen) Coble of Flora, Evelyn (Oren) Donley of Kell, and Wayne Coble of Xenia; 8 grandkids; 20 great-grandkids; several step-great-grandkids; 1 brother and 5 sisters: Mike (Connie) Smith of Flora, Lois (Herb) Simpson of Flora, Maggie (Tom) Simpson of Flora, Amie (Gary) Bonham of Sims, Venita (Tom) Wartsbaugh of Oblong, and Dorothy (Mike) Rigg of Texas; and 2 sisters-in-law: Dorothy Smith of Springfield and Mabel Smith of Xenia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 6 brothers and 1 sister: Bill Smith, Edwin Smith, John Smith, Curt Smith, Dale Smith, Robert Smith, and Neva Geff.
A funeral service for Ellen Coble will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Onstott Cemetery, Xenia. Visitation will be from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
