Betty Josephine Shefka, age 87, of Xenia, Illinois, passed away Friday evening, March 27, 2020, at her home.
She was born April 16, 1932, in Cooper, Alabama, the daughter of Mitchell and Ethel (DuPree) DeVaughn. She was united in marriage to Martin Shefka on April 16, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois, and together they shared 18 years of marriage until his death March 5, 2007.
Betty had worked in the past as a cook for North Palos Schools and had also owned and operated Betty’s Nutrition Center in Salem. She had attended Oak Street Baptist Church in the past and most recently Strong Tower Church in Flora.
She is survived by her children: Yvonne (Dave) Rogers of Benton, Roy Skaj of Worth, and Charles (Peggy) Skaj of Hamel; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Mitchell and Ethel DeVaughn; husband: Martin Shefka; a son: Jesse Shires; and a daughter: Gloria Shires.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Strong Tower Church in Flora with Pastor Ron Closson officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
