Funeral Ceremony: 10 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home
Interment: Clay City Cemetery
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. on Sunday evening at the funeral home
Frederick F. Shelton, age 89, of Clay City, Illinois, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon, June 8, 2023, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana surrounded by all his children and grandchildren.
He was born January 30, 1934, in Clay County, the son of Alonzo L. and Mildred Ann (Mugrage) Shelton. He was united in marriage to Shirley Laird on December 31, 1958, at the Wesley Methodist Church in Flora and together they have shared 64 wedding anniversaries together.
Fred was a graduate of Clay City High School and went on to study architecture at SIU Carbondale. He served in the US Army and had worked at McDonnell Douglas and later owned and operated Clay County Implements from 1988-2005. Fred was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife: Shirley Shelton of Clay City; 3 children: Sheila (Darrell) Strange of Clay City, Randy Shelton of Flora, and Dina (Hank) Hilmes of Flora; 4 grandchildren: Dustin (Jordyn) Strange, Silessia Brown, Sonae Shelton, and Dalton (Beth) Hilmes; and 6 great-grandchildren: Laighlah and Rayna Strange, Qynlin and Quadn Brown, and Judson and Hadley Hilmes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Barbara Shelton, Charlotte Shelton, Freida (Harold) Taggart, Loeta (Edwin) Gibbs, and Bob Shelton.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Clay City Cemetery with the presentation of military funeral honors. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday evening at the funeral home.
