Susan Christine Sanders, age 74, of Newton, Illinois, passed away Friday morning, May 29, 2026.
She was born October 21, 1951, in Olney, the daughter of Archie L. and Patricia “Patsy” L. (Kincaid) Hilliard. She was united in marriage to Edwin E. Sanders on September 30, 1977, in Olney, and together they shared nearly 48 years of marriage until his passing on September 3, 2025.
Susan dedicated 25 years of service to the Illinois Department of Corrections, retiring in 2011 as a Correctional Lieutenant. She and Ed shared many happy times traveling together, especially enjoying cruises and the opportunity to see new places. They also treasured time spent camping at Kuhl’s, where she enjoyed relaxing and visiting with friends. Susan’s beloved dogs held a very special place in her heart and brought her great comfort, companionship, and happiness throughout the years.
She is survived by her son: John H. (Carla) Nicholson of Iuka; 3 grandsons: Kyle Nicholson of Flora, Trevor (Mariah) Nicholson of Charleston, and Braden Nicholson of Colorado; and a brother: Mark (Debbie) Hilliard of Flora.
She was preceded in passing by her parents; husband; son: Dale Nicholson; and a brother: Dale Hilliard.
A funeral ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora, with Charles Buchanan officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. Susan was such a wonderful person & co-worker at Robinson Correctional Center!! She was excellent at her job and always willing to help other staff! She will be forever missed by so many of the staff that had the pleasure of knowing her. So very sorry for your loss.
