Michael Louis Chaney, age 81, of Flora, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2026, at his home, with his loving family around him.
Mike was born July 24, 1944, in Flora, the son of William Frederick and Opal Fern (Greenwood) Chaney. He was united in marriage to June Rose Allison on March 29, 1996, in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and together they shared 30 wedding anniversaries and many dances along the way.
Mike often described himself as a “Jack of all trades,” and throughout his life he proved that to be true with capable hands and a willing heart. His variety of interests and strong work ethic led him through many different roles and experiences. He operated restaurants, worked for Caterpillar, and spent time in the construction trades as a concrete contractor. He also operated Chaney Real Estate alongside his brother, Bill. Later, he worked in right-of-way infrastructure positions, including with Hunter’s and finally Wabash Communications, where he retired from.
A man of enduring faith, Mike was a lifelong member of the Flora First Methodist Church. He was also a longtime member of the Flora Elks, and the “On the Hill” gang.
He enjoyed the outdoors and found contentment in simple things, like his longtime enjoyment of casting a line on a fishing trip close to home or far away. He looked forward each year to taking care of his vegetable garden and was happy to share and donate from the bountiful crop he grew, especially tomatoes, zucchini, and asparagus.
Mike was always happy to see his grandkids or lend a hand to his sons-in-law with any of their projects. He also had a bit of a soft spot for his cat, Cali. The home that Mike and June shared throughout their life together is a place filled with many wonderful family memories. In the front yard, he placed a fountain that will continue to be appreciated for the peaceful sound of the water and as a reminder of his love that always remains.
He is survived by his wife: June Chaney of Flora; children: Jodi (Steve) Persinger of Flora, Jennifer (Justin) Warren of Flora, Lea (Tim) Havel of Freeburg, Melissa (Josh) Prosser of Flora, Susan (Scott) Harris of Rinard, and Lori (Ray) Connolly of Cedar Hill, Missouri; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Donna Chaney; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; a brother: William “Bill” Chaney; and a sister: Laura “Jean” Shehorn.
A funeral ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Pastor Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to either Flora First Methodist Church or Clay County Hospice, and these will be accepted through the funeral home.
